Drag show rightly titled
By Editorial
Gender-Bending Fun, Cross-Dressing Extravaganza, The Bronco Event Show; these are just a few of the names that were considered for last year's annual activist-sponsored drag show. Administrators barred the show's organizers from using 'drag' in the title, hence the title improvisation.
As editors of the campus newspaper, we have anxiously followed the title tug of war between university officials and the show's producers. This year, negotiations have proved to be more expedient and less dramatic, resulting in the aptly chosen "Drag Show" title as well as an informational photography exhibit in Benson [see: Annual GALA event renamed 'drag show,' 11/06].
What prompted the university to suddenly retract its previous decision and embrace everything drag so readily?
Claire Riecke, a performer and producer for the show, said that she and administrators agreed to ensure that the show explored the educational facets of the drag culture and proved to be an enlightening experience for those in attendance. It was decided that "drag show" would be the only appropriate title for a show that would accomplish these goals.
This decision shift certainly seems to be a positive contrast to last year's ambiguously named drag show.
We support the university's reconsideration of its prior decision, as it displays flexibility and acceptance. This most recent stance promotes the liberal, educationally diverse environment of a Jesuit institution.
In the future, we hope that the university will make decisions with the student body in mind.
