Broncos Demolish Toreros With Commanding Win

The crowd was rocking on Saturday as the Leavey Center was packed with over 2,000 people for Alumni Day, ready to watch the Broncos take on the University of San Diego. NBA legend and former Bronco Steve Nash ’96 was in the building, further amplifying the atmosphere. Expectations for the Broncos were high coming into the matchup and they didn’t disappoint, downing the Toreros 93-70.

The Broncos got off to a slow start in the game’s opening minutes, trailing 8-5 after a pair of 3-pointers by the Toreros. The Broncos then came storming back with a dominant 18-0 run to gain a 23-8 advantage with around 11 minutes left in the half.

The Toreros scored 10 unanswered points to cut the Bronco lead to 31-22 with 5:47 left in the half. The Broncos, however, wouldn’t let the Toreros back into the game the rest of the way.

Elijah Mahi ’26 threw it up, and Bukky Oboye ’27 threw it down with 5:20 left in the half and got the crowd buzzing. Mahi had a career-high seven assists on the night, and it was only the beginning of a career night across the box score for him.

“I’d be remiss if I didn’t applaud Elijah,” Bronco head coach Herb Sendek said. “He’s really coming on, and playing good basketball—so proud of him.”

Oboye also had a great night, recording nine points, nine rebounds, and four blocks in 22 minutes on the court—all career highs. He stepped up big time in the absence of Christoph Tilly ’26, who is dealing with a contusion from the matchup versus the University of Portland last Thursday.

“He stepped up and helped our team tremendously,” Sendek said. “His rim protection paid dividends for the team as well, I'm really happy for him.”

The Broncos ended the half up comfortably 48-36. The team shot 57.1% from three in the first half, the highest percentage from three they’ve shot in any half this season when attempting nine or more threes. The Broncos also hit eight threes in the first half alone for the second straight game.

The second half was relatively back and forth as the Bronco lead hovered around 10 most of the night. However, the Broncos put the nail in the coffin with 4:18 remaining, going on a 14-0 run to take a commanding 86-68 lead. Mahi converted an and-one bucket to spark the Broncos’ final push. Mahi had his 12th game of the season in double figures, posting a new career-high with 28 points and adding six rebounds.

“After hitting that first layup, it was all confidence--I love getting my teammates involved and filling up the stat sheet,” Mahi said.

Carlos Stewart Jr. ’25 had his 16th game of the season in double figures with 14 points. Adama-Alpha Bal ’25 had 15 points of his own, his 20th time being in double figures this season, which leads the Broncos.

Steven Jamerson II had 21 points and seven rebounds for San Diego, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the large point margin.

The Broncos prevailed handily over the Toreros and look to get revenge on the road against Saint Mary’s College of California as they travel to Moraga on Tuesday.
