A Blue Book that you can look forward to

Although it sounds like an urban legend, back in the 50's and 60's Project Blue Book was a governmental study of unidentified flying objects and their potential threat to national security.

Network bias provides alternative

Fox News. These two words elicit extreme reactions on both sides of the political spectrum. To the right, it is one of "fair and balanced" news reporting and to the left, which is likely most people reading this, it represents right-wing propaganda. It is not the flamboyance of O'Reilly or the moustache of Geraldo that has made Fox News the highest rated news network on TV; it is CNN and the nightly network news. When four channels were churning out similar messages every night, the emergence of Fox created an alternative. The criticism came when the alternative was clearly giving a right-of-centre based reporting of the news. The difference between Fox, MSNBC, CNN and the rest of the news channels is that Fox is almost proudly conservative, whereas others maintain their independence. The question then is an issue we discussed in a class I had last week: can they call themselves a news network?

Sainthood for political activist?

Monsignor Oscar Romero was the outspoken protector of El Salvador's poor during the brutally violent civil war, in which tens of thousands of impoverished "campesinos"- farm workers- were tortured, murdered and went missing. Romero gave hope to millions through his weekly radio sermons, interceded on behalf of his oppressed flock, and refused to be silenced by death threats or government intimidation. He was a stalwart voice for the voiceless and embodied the Jesuit goal of solidarity with the poor. Accused of subverting the Church with communism, Romero was an unpopular figure among the wealthy conservatives and powerful Salvadoran army. On March 24th, 1980, while celebrating mass, Romero was shot in the heart by an unidentified assassin. He died within minutes.

Racism not the issue

I have been a student at Santa Clara for the past year, and to my knowledge no one has treated me differently because of my skin color. On the contrary, I have been a partaker of one of the finest educations money can buy and have been privileged to work with some of the finest human beings in academia.

Inaccurate assumptions

After attending the open forum to discuss the recent theme party, I began to think about other ways we offend each other besides dressing up as certain stereotypes. Personally, it is the words we choose or the assumptions we make in conversation that offend me the most and are, at the same time, the offenses of which I am the guiltiest.
